What is an OSPO?
Open Source Program Offices, or OSPOs as they are also called, is a concept that originates in the technology industry in the United States. In principle, it constitutes a competence center that supports its own organization in using, developing, and collaborating around open source software based on set business objectives. The OSPO enables an organization to mature and use open source software as a tool to create value. In recent times, this concept, as well as this way of organizing, has started to spill over into the public sector both internationally and in Sweden. Even if the term “OSPO” is not always used directly, there is growing interest in how equivalent support functions can be established and how the use, development, and collaboration around open source software can be promoted and enabled.
About the network
The goal and ambition for the network is to share knowledge and practically exchange experiences that can help each organization advance in its maturity around open source software. We have 2-3 full day workshops each year hosted by our various members, where we address topics of common importance and urgency. Presentation and workshops are mixed, with the goal to keep discussions on a practical level. Everyone typically share their own views, setups, processes, and challenges, and contribute to joint knowledge development. Beyond our recurrent workshops, we have a mailing list to asynchronous communication. Both the workshops and the mailing list operate under the Chatham House Rule implying that you are free to use any information and share, but not attribute the source (unless given explicit permission). Reason is to create a safe yet open environment for the participants.
The network is facilitated by a volunteer coordination group but is based on clear co-ownership and engagement from its members. Presentations and materials produced through the network will be published openly via Nosad.se.
Current members of the coordination group includes:
- Johan Linåker (RISE)
- Jimmy Ahlberg (Ericsson)
- Alin Jerpelea (Sony)
- Per Persson (Sundsvalls kommun)
